Plot summary
Casey Carlyle is a science student in Millbrook, Connecticut, chasing a scholarship to Harvard. For the personal summer project the scholarship requires, she picks ice skating, her favorite childhood hobby, and applies physics to her own technique. She skips levels, becomes a junior skater, and shares computer-generated algorithms with Gen Harwood, Tiffany Lai and Nikki Fletcher, juniors competing on the national circuit. Casey trains at the rink where Gen's mother, Tina, a former skater, now coaches and keeps Gen on a strict program. Schoolwork, skating and a concessions job compete for her hours, and her mother, Joan, wants her to stop skating as her grades slip. Teddy, Gen's brother, drives the Zamboni and becomes close to her.

- Following the early deaths of stars Michelle Trachtenberg in 2025 and Hayden Panettiere in 2026, skaters on social media credited the film and Trachtenberg's character in particular as inspirations for taking up figure skating, deepening the film's cult following.

- Michelle Trachtenberg said a mistake was made in one of the physics formulas her character recites on screen; rather than reshoot the scene, the crew fixed the error by cutting to a shot of the back of her head while the correct term was looped into the audio.
- Actor Trevor Blumas trained to drive a Zamboni ice-resurfacing machine after arriving in Toronto for the shoot, and ended up actually smoothing the ice at the rink some mornings during filming.
