Plot summary
NASA astronauts Kira Foster and Christian Campbell arrive at the International Space Station, where Commander Gordon Barrett and the cosmonauts Weronika Vetrov, Nicholai Pulov and his brother Alexey welcome them. The two crews work well together despite the differences between their governments, and Kira sees Earth from orbit for the first time. Then she watches nuclear blasts spread over the United States, and the link to mission control goes dead. A coded message reaches Gordon: the Russian military has attacked, and he is to take the station by any means necessary. He tells Kira and Christian, and the three wonder whether the cosmonauts have received a matching instruction. The station is also losing altitude and will fall within a day if nothing arrives to help.

- Gabriela Cowperthwaite described it as "surreal" when Russia invaded Ukraine while I.S.S. was in post-production. She said she did not consider the film a political movie, but wanted to show how the brunt of such conflicts falls on "the little people".
- Ariana DeBose auditioned for the astronaut Kira Foster before she won her Oscar for West Side Story. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite was impressed by her understated approach, and DeBose's dance background helped her play the character in zero gravity.
- Masha Mashkova landed the role of Russian cosmonaut Weronika Vetrov only because the actress originally cast dropped out after falling ill and then suggested Mashkova for the part.
- The script originally had Dr. Kira Foster researching microbes rather than mice. Astronaut Scott Kelly's memoir Endurance: A Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery was used as research and shaped how the film's mice react to zero gravity.
