Plot summary
Barbara Thorson is a teenager who lives with her brother and her older sister, Karen. She has built a fantasy world out of a role-playing game and the pitching career of Harry Coveleski, and she is sure that giants are on their way to her town. To hold them off she makes weapons and sets traps. Sophia, a new student from Leeds, England, wants to befriend her, but Barbara keeps her distance at first. The school psychologist Mrs. Mollé steps in when Barbara's bullies confront her and tries to get through to her, and Barbara refuses any distraction from her routine. She introduces Sophia to the giants' mythology, shows her the baits and traps, and lets her see a warhammer inscribed with Coveleski's name, then describes the Harbingers that she says warn her of giants.
