Plot summary
French television journalist Marie Lelay is on assignment in Thailand when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami sweeps her under. Rescuers pull her out and she revives with a memory of what she saw while she was gone. Back in Paris, her producer Didier gives her a leave of absence because the episode has unsettled her work. In San Francisco, George Lonegan once earned money as a medium, able to hear the dead when he touches someone, and he quit because of what it cost him. His brother Billy presses him to take on a paying client. Marcus, a twelve-year-old in London, has a twin, Jason, and a mother, Jackie, struggling with addiction; social services are circling the family.

- Days after the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the film was withdrawn from all cinemas in that country, two weeks earlier than originally planned, with a Warner Bros. spokesperson saying the film's terrifying tsunami scenes were 'not appropriate' at this time.
- A scheduling conflict with The Adjustment Bureau led Matt Damon to suggest recasting his role with another actor entirely, offering up Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Hayden Christensen or Josh Brolin, but Clint Eastwood rearranged the shoot instead so Damon could stay in both films.
- Executive producer Steven Spielberg was initially concerned that the low-key ending to the script would put audiences off the film, so Morgan rewrote it to be grander; however, subsequent drafts restored the original ending.
- For a scene at the London Book Fair, the production rebuilt the fair inside Alexandra Palace, with publishers like Random House constructing their actual stands two months before the real fair took place.
- Eastwood chose untrained actors for the film's child roles because he did not want "child actors who'd been over-instructed in Child Acting 101."
