Plot summary
John is an ambitious young officer in the Metropolitan Police. In 1988 he and colleagues Trevor, Eddie and Charlie are sent undercover to join a violent football firm connected to Shadwell Town. Their task is to identify the 'generals' who orchestrate the violence. Posing as painters and decorators, John and Trevor begin visiting The Rock, the main hooligan pub, at lunchtimes and on match days. They get to know barmaid Linda and some regulars. They attend matches with hooligans Martin, Nik and Gumbo. A pub crawl leads to a brawl with Arsenal fans. As time passes, John finds the line between his job and the firm's world less clear.

- The plot was loosely based on Operation Full-Time, a Scotland Yard undercover operation that tried to identify the leaders of West Ham United's Inter City Firm. None of the real officers suffered the fate of Reece Dinsdale's character John.
- Screenwriter Vincent O'Connell called himself a "method writer", saying he became so immersed in writing the script that he got into scraps with people and started fights in the pub, and sometimes questioned why he was behaving that way.
- The pub used as "The Rock" in the film was the Rising Sun on Old Jamaica Road in Bermondsey, South London, which was demolished shortly after filming.
