Plot summary
Davina is a high-school sophomore in Berkeley who takes care of her mother, whose multiple sclerosis leaves her needing help; her father walked out shortly after Davina was born. She marks her sixteenth birthday with a picnic in the park alongside her closest friend, Cassidy, who presents her with a camera. There Davina spots Sterling, a punk who spends time with his skateboarding friends at the park's ramp, and photographs him. He asks her to meet him the next day, and they spend it in each other's company. Sterling tells her that he and his mother left his father after the beatings, and each admits a wish to be anywhere but here.

- Leah Meyerhoff, who calls the film semi-autobiographical and had already cast her own mother in it, learned of Natalia Dyer through a tipoff from the casting team of True Grit (2010), where Dyer had auditioned for the Mattie Ross role that went to Hailee Steinfeld.
- According to Meyerhoff, I Believe in Unicorns was one of the last features shot on Fuji 16 mm film stock, a stock that is no longer manufactured.
