Plot summary
On a dusty road, a couple picks up a boy walking alone in the middle of nowhere, a mat under his arm, hoping to help him. Gabriel says nothing about himself beyond the claim that he is here to help. The town he comes into, Promise, Texas, has spent ten years with barren land, a failed economy, and one curse after another that has worn its residents down. Some take him for an answer to prayer, others for a runaway or a false prophet. Brody, the sheriff, wants to know the truth about the boy while he struggles to keep the dying town together.
