Plot summary
Elizabeth Smart narrates her own account of being taken from her family's Salt Lake City home in June 2002, when she is fourteen. Brian David Mitchell, a religious fanatic who once worked as a handyman for her parents, wakes her sister as he leads her away. In his camp in the hills, he and his wife, Wanda Ileen Barzee, keep her and put her through religious rituals. Mitchell declares himself married to her and calls her his second wife, and he rapes, starves and drugs her. He tells her that disobeying will bring harm to her family. She is made to pick a new name from the Bible and chooses Esther. Robed and veiled, she accompanies the pair when they travel, and Mitchell takes them to a library to plan a move out of the city.
