Plot summary
Dragons raid the island of Berk and carry off livestock, and the village's young are taught to fight them. Hiccup is the 16-year-old son of chieftain Stoick the Vast, an outcast among the villagers, and he builds devices to make up for his physical weaknesses. During a raid he brings down a Night Fury with a bolas, and no one believes him. He sets out to kill the creature, finds it wounded and helpless, and lets it go instead; the dragon does not harm him. Stoick sails with his fleet to hunt the dragons' nest and enrolls Hiccup in dragon-fighting training with Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, and the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut. In the forest, Hiccup finds the Night Fury grounded with half its tail fin gone, and names him Toothless.

- To play the Viking chieftain Stoick the Vast, Gerard Butler wore a massive costume that weighed 90 pounds for the live-action remake of the animated film.
- The Faroe Islands' Tindhólmur and Drangarnir, which had inspired the look of Berk in the animated film, were used as filming locations for some of the live-action flight scenes.
- Puppeteers led by Tom Wilton performed the dragons on set so the actors had something to act against, and Framestore built eight-axis gimbals that each rider sat on with their dragon's head attached for flight scenes.
- In November 2024, Forbes reported that Universal had spent over $50 million on pre-production for its live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
- The production used heavy practical sets and was filmed with the IMAX format in mind, and many scenes, notably Hiccup's first encounter with Toothless, were re-created shot-for-shot from the original animation.
- Dean DeBlois asked Roger Deakins, a visual consultant on the animated films, to shoot the live-action version, but Deakins declined and recommended Bill Pope, who got the job.
- The film was DreamWorks Animation's first live-action feature since the studio was spun off from the original live-action studio in 2004.
