Plot summary
Rayanna Green, known as Raya, has been studying at a private school, and when the tuition can no longer be paid she goes back to live with her family in the city. Her sister died of a drug addiction, and her mother presses her to pass a test that would set her on the way to medical school. Raya learns that a step-dancing competition offers a top prize of $50,000 and uses her moves to win a place in the JSJ crew, which her friend Bishop leads and which is otherwise made up of men. The local women are jealous of her, and being the only woman among the dancers sets her apart.

- How She Move was set to open in Canada in March 2007, but after Paramount Vantage and MTV Films, both owned by Viacom, bought it at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, the release was delayed so dance sequences, particularly the finale, could be reshot.
- The film was set and shot in Toronto, but after test audience screenings Paramount edited out references to the team traveling from Toronto to Detroit for the dance competition.
