Plot summary
Newton Davis is a struggling architect who builds a house in his hometown of Dobb's Mill, Massachusetts, for his longtime girlfriend Becky. When she refuses his proposal, he abandons the finished house and returns to the city. There he meets Gwen, a waitress at the Café Budapest, who pretends she speaks no English while he pours out the story of the house and of Becky. The next morning she finds the sketch he left behind, travels to Dobb's Mill, and settles into the empty house. She charges groceries to his account as his wife, invents a courtship and a marriage for the townspeople, and meets his parents, who are hurt that he married without telling them. Newton drives up to sell the house and finds her living in it.
