Plot summary
Alan, a classical music critic, and his wife Sarah are preparing to leave Portland, Oregon, for Italy when Alan introduces Kelly, the house sitter he has hired. Sarah, recently released from a mental hospital, is reluctant to travel so soon, but she agrees. Kelly's boyfriend Jesse pushes to stay in the house with her; she refuses, and he storms off when she lets her disabled brother Tim move in. Jesse returns with Adam, a young boy he found abandoned at a supermarket, and proposes ransoming him. Kelly tries to return the child, but Adam gives no information. As the days pass, Tim begins to see strange visions in the house.
