
Plot summary
Stephen Byrne is a wealthy Victorian novelist who lives and works by a river with his wife, Marjorie. He has long been jealous of his brother, John, who is crippled. Emily Gaunt is the family maid. One night, after drinking, Stephen makes advances on Emily. She resists him, and he kills her. He then turns to John for help with the body, and the two men put her in a boat and dump her into the river.
