Plot summary
In 1859, surveyors drive stakes along the banks of the San Pedro River, laying out homestead lots for a frontier town to be called Horizon. The missionary Desmarais finds the surveyors dead, buries them and founds Horizon. In 1863 an Apache war band under Pionsenay raids the settlement, killing several residents, among them the husband and son of Frances Kittredge, who takes shelter with her daughter Elizabeth at Camp Gallant. Russell Ganz rides to Camp Grant to alert the Army, and Lieutenant Gephart and Sgt. Major Riordan lead troops that bury the dead, track the raiders and aid the survivors. Pionsenay quarrels with the tribal elder Tuayeseh, who favors living alongside the settlers, and leaves the tribe. A wagon train under Matthew Van Weyden crosses from the West Kansas Territory toward Horizon, watched by Pawnee warriors.
