Plot summary
Alexia travels with her friend Marie to spend a couple of days with her family in their farm in the country. They arrive late and they are welcomed by Alexia's father. Late in the night, a sadistic and sick killer breaks into the farmhouse, slaughters Alexia's family--including their dog--and kidnaps Alexia. Marie hides from the criminal and tries to help the hysterical and frightened Alexia, chase the maniac, and disclose his identity in the end.

- Viewers noticed striking plot similarities between High Tension and Dean Koontz's novel Intensity, and director Alexandre Aja acknowledged at the 2004 Sundance Festival that he had read the novel; Koontz refused to sue because he found the film "so puerile, so disgusting, and so intellectually bankrupt".
- To avoid an NC-17 rating from the MPAA, about one minute was cut from High Tension and some scenes were edited so the American version would receive an R rating.
- High Tension grossed $3.2 million in North America against the $14 million Lionsgate spent on its distribution cost and marketing campaign, for a worldwide total of $6,291,958.
