Plot summary
Kurt Barnert is a boy in Nazi-era Germany and goes with his aunt Elisabeth to a Dresden exhibition of Degenerate Art. At a Nazi Party rally, Elisabeth is chosen to present flowers to Adolf Hitler. As a young man, Kurt enrolls at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he is made to paint socialist realism, a style he does not identify with. There he falls in love with Ellie, a fashion design student and the daughter of Professor Carl Seeband. Seeband judges Kurt unsuitable for his daughter and works to sabotage the couple.

- Gerhard Richter told The New Yorker that he had given director Donnersmarck written notice he was not allowed to use his name or any of his paintings, but that Donnersmarck had linked his name to the film anyway.
- Schreiber's 2002 investigation found that Gerhard Richter's father-in-law Heinrich Eufinger was a high-ranking SS doctor who personally performed over 900 forced sterilizations, and he directed the hospital where Richter's aunt Marianne Schönfelder was sterilized.
- Never Look Away was nominated in two Oscar categories, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, only the second time a German-language film by a German director was nominated in multiple categories; the other was Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot, 36 years earlier.
- Donnersmarck said the film is fiction, but its inspiration was Jürgen Schreiber's article on painter Gerhard Richter, whose aunt Marianne Schönfelder was murdered by the Nazis after she developed schizophrenia; Richter painted her holding him as a baby, first showing the work as Mother and Child to hide the personal link.
- Never Look Away had its very first public screening at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, where it received a 13-minute standing ovation.
