Plot summary

Amy Minsky, thirty-something and unemployed, moves back into her parents' house in Westport, Connecticut, as her marriage to David ends. Depressed and out of work, she spends her days at home watching Marx Brothers films and rejects advice to change her life. Her mother Ruth insists she come to a dinner the family is giving for friends Gwen and Larry Hammer. Stan, Amy's father, a lawyer, wants Larry as a client; the fee would let him retire and travel with Ruth. The Hammers bring their son Jeremy, a nineteen-year-old actor. Talk at the table turns awkward when Amy is asked about her prospects and admits she gave up graduate study in photography when she married. She leaves the table for a part of the house under renovation, and Jeremy comes after her.
