Plot summary
Lloyd is a high school senior whose mother, Maggie Cooper, fusses over him constantly. For his seventeenth birthday she takes him to Venice Beach and talks about the day he will marry and leave her. Lloyd mentions that he might turn out to be gay. At school he finds a birthday poster his mother has put up in the halls, and his English teacher asks him to read his poem at a larger event, though he dreads public speaking. Classmate Carrie asks to see his poetry. Maggie, pressed by Lloyd to get involved at school, joins the PTA, where she clashes with the chair, Barbara Wolfe. Her friend Norma lays out the cost of college tuition and notes that gay students count among the minority groups eligible for scholarships. Maggie warms to the idea of a gay son.
