Plot summary
The oldest of five children of Luke and Sarah is Heaven Leigh Casteel, and the family lives in the backwoods outside Winnerow, West Virginia. She is the academically gifted one. The family is shunned in town, and Heaven is the child Luke keeps at a distance. Luke is away much of the time as a father and husband, looking for work, and most of the little money he earns goes toward drink for himself. Her siblings Tom and Fanny are teenagers, and Janey and Keith are young adolescents. They are her life. A new classmate, Logan Stonewall, has arrived in Winnerow. He is drawn to Heaven and treats her with kindness and respect as his love for her deepens.
