Plot summary
Amy Jensen is a university student on Staten Island preparing for her wedding to Phil. Her friends Nancy and Joyce surprise her at home with a small bachelorette party while her parents are away for the weekend, leaving her in charge of her younger sister, Diane. Amy has seen a man watching her in town and in her own yard. Marvin, her ex-boyfriend, works at the local morgue and keeps turning up hoping to win her back, and Amy admits doubts about marrying Phil. Detectives Frank Daley and Len Gamble are investigating a killing at the dress shop where Amy had her fitting, and Gamble's own bride was murdered on their wedding day years earlier.

- Tom Hanks made his film debut in a small part. His character was originally written to be killed off along with Nancy's, but the filmmakers liked him so much they never filmed his death scene.
- The climax was shot at Staten Island's historic Seaview Hospital, using the underground tunnels beneath it that had been built to remove the bodies of tuberculosis patients in the 19th century.
- Armand Mastroianni pitched producer Edgar Lansbury a horror film based on the urban legend "The Hook"; sensing Lansbury's disinterest mid-pitch, he spontaneously suggested making it a self-referential film within a film.
- Caitlin O'Heaney took the lead role of Amy Jensen despite disliking horror films, doing it to get into the Screen Actors Guild, after director Armand Mastroianni interviewed roughly 100 actresses.
- The film's opening scene of a character being murdered in a movie theater while watching a slasher film was repeated in Wes Craven's 1997 film Scream 2.
- The entire production, from script to final edit, took only six months, and star Caitlin O'Heaney recalled that most of the film was shot in single takes as the crew moved between locations daily.
- For promotion, MGM shot trailer footage of Caitlin O'Heaney at a mirror with a hand breaking through the glass and grabbing her; the shot appears nowhere in the film and was filmed on Los Angeles soundstages after principal photography ended.
