Plot summary
Stella Johnson sells cosmetics door to door in Harper Valley, Ohio, and raises her fourteen-year-old daughter, Dee, on her own. Dee's school sends home a letter from the Parent-Teacher Association board, led by the snobbish Flora Simpson-Reilly, warning that Stella's ways do not match the community's standards and that Dee could be expelled. Stella goes to the PTA meeting and tells the board what she thinks of their hypocrisy. Someone toilet-papers her house and throws a rock through her window. With the beautician Alice Finley and the bartender Herbie Maddox, Stella plans to get even, and the wealthy board member Willis Newton, who does not side with Flora, encourages her to run for PTA president.

- Filming a pink-elephant scene on Halloween night 1977 in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, went wrong exactly as director Ralph Senensky had warned producers it would: a spooked elephant knocked Nanette Fabray to the ground, leaving her with a concussion and back sprains, and production stopped.
- Director Ralph Senensky left Harper Valley PTA two weeks before the end of principal photography and was replaced by Richard Bennett.
