Louis Nye

Biography

Louis Nye was an American actor who specialized in comedy. Born in Hartford, he served in the Army's Special Services during World War II, entertaining troops in the Pacific, where he met Carl Reiner. Afterward he settled in New York, acted in live television, Broadway plays, and variety shows including The Jack Benny Program and The Victor Borge Show. He gained his greatest fame as a cast member of The Steve Allen Show, playing urbane and often pretentious characters, notably the country-club braggart Gordon Hathaway. He then moved to Los Angeles and became a character actor, guest starring on many series such as Make Room for Daddy, Burke's Law, The Munsters, Laverne & Shirley, and St. Elsewhere. He also played Delbert Gray on The Ann Sothern Show and Sonny Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies, appeared in the sitcom Needles and Pins, recorded comedy albums, and did voice work in animation, including Inspector Gadget.
