Plot summary
Harold Lee works as an investment banker, and his colleagues talk him into finishing their assignments while they go out. Kumar Patel, his friend, sits a medical school interview and deliberately ruins his chances. Harold has feelings for Maria, his neighbor, and has not told her. The two smoke marijuana and watch television in their apartment, where a White Castle commercial makes them hungry for hamburgers. They drive to the nearest White Castle in New Brunswick and find a Burger Shack in its place. Someone there tells them about another White Castle in Cherry Hill, and the two get back on the road.

- Despite top billing, Kal Penn and John Cho were each paid a gross salary of just $75,000 for the film; after taxes, agent, manager and lawyer fees, Penn said his work on it left him about $22,500.
- Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg wrote a role for Neil Patrick Harris as a fictionalized version of himself without asking him first; Harris liked the script and signed on, and Ralph Macchio was their backup choice had he refused.
- For the role of Kumar, Kal Penn beat out Sendhil Ramamurthy only after auditioning seven times, while the part of Harold came down to John Cho, Bobby Lee, Randall Park and Dante Basco.
- Set in New Jersey but shot mainly in Toronto, the film's Princeton University scenes were filmed at the University of Toronto's Victoria College and Knox College, and because Canada has no White Castle, the design team built a White Castle franchise for the shoot.
- A few days before shooting began, John Cho knocked on Kal Penn's door and told him that if they were supposed to be best friends, they had better start hanging out together; a beer together began a real friendship.
- In the 11 days before the film's release, New Line Cinema turned a Sunset Strip parking lot into a temporary White Castle that served 40,000 burgers to patrons including Quentin Tarantino, Farrah Fawcett and Jay Leno.
- Jon Hurwitz got the idea to build the film around White Castle from craving the chain's burgers while living in Pennsylvania, which had no White Castle locations, so his family brought him frozen ones from New Jersey.
