Plot summary
In New York City, Sam Wexler is close to turning 30 and still cannot find a publisher for his first novel. Riding the subway, he meets Rasheen, a boy in foster care, and takes him to his apartment for a few days. His friend Annie has alopecia, which shapes how she sees herself and holds her back from commitment, and two very different men are in her life. His cousin Mary Catherine weighs a move to California, where her boyfriend Charlie has a job offer. Mississippi sings at a cabaret and wants a career in the city, and Sam takes an interest in her.
