Plot summary
The Spirit of Fire is dispatched to the ruined planet Harvest, where human UNSC forces are still fighting the alien Covenant years after the invasion. Serina, the ship's artificial intelligence, assists the crew. Captain James Cutter finds that the Covenant has been digging at the planet's north pole. Covenant forces overrun the UNSC's main outpost on Harvest, and Cutter sends Sergeant John Forge to take it back. Forge scouts the dig and reports a Forerunner facility; Professor Ellen Anders arrives to examine the structure, identifies it as an interstellar map, and reads coordinates that point to Arcadia, a human colony.

- Ensemble Studios spent 12 to 18 months working on Halo Wars' control scheme, hacking an Age of Mythology expansion, The Titans, to use as a prototype for control experiments.
- Halo Wars was not originally a Halo game; Microsoft suggested turning Ensemble's console strategy project into one, and Bungie founder Tony Goodman said in 2012 that Bungie saw the move as "the whoring out of our franchise".
- Although more than 100 people worked on Halo Wars, which cost tens of millions of dollars, a Covenant campaign was never made because of a lack of manpower and money.
- Ensemble Studios was closed by Microsoft before Halo Wars was released, and ex-employees founded Robot Entertainment, which continued to support the game with updates and downloadable content.

- Ensemble initially considered making the Flood a playable race in Halo Wars, but the idea did not progress beyond the concept stage because the Flood would have needed to be similar to StarCraft's Zerg to stay balanced with the UNSC and Covenant.
