Plot summary
David Gold was a child actor, and his fame has faded. He is down on his luck, and he is an unrecovered alcoholic and drug addict who invents the credentials that get him a last-ditch job as a guidance counselor at a high school. He keeps his gay sexuality closeted, and he is in denial about his health after a skin cancer diagnosis. In the job he hands out the worst possible advice, taken from his own deeply unhealthy coping mechanisms, and the students take to him. Many of them use what he says to work through problems of their own.
