Plot summary
Spoon, Stretch and Cookie are a spoken word band in Detroit, and all three use heroin. Cookie goes down on her first hit of the drug, so Spoon and Stretch decide that they want to quit. Getting clean means a government detox program, and the program turns into a day of offices, forms and red tape. The pair is sent from one office to the next, and the program will not take them in. Drug dealers chase them, and the police chase them too, and neither man knows whether Cookie will make it through the day.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gridlock'd (1997)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Vondie Curtis-Hall drew on his own teenage heroin use in Detroit's punk rock scene to write the film, saying using the drug was "a competitive thing we did, to be accepted" among musicians trying to play faster and write better songs.
- PolyGram initially refused to finance the film because it had just released Trainspotting and did not want two heroin movies, until Tupac Shakur's record label put up the money and PolyGram came back around.
- Tupac Shakur was cast only after the director's first choice, Laurence Fishburne, was unavailable; producer Preston Holmes pushed for Shakur even though he had just gotten out of jail after a 1995 sexual abuse conviction and "no one wanted to touch him."
