Plot summary
Jeff Buckley is a young singer in New York in 1991. He is getting ready to appear on stage for the first time, at a concert in Brooklyn in honor of his father, the folk singer Tim Buckley, a man he barely knew. The program is built from his father's songs, and the legacy behind them is what he has to face while he rehearses. Allie, a young woman who works at the show, becomes his friend in those days. Jeff also jams with Gary Lucas on an instrumental that Lucas had as a song idea. The tribute concert is held at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn. In rehearsal he begins to find what his own voice can do.

- Penn Badgley was cast as Jeff Buckley after his audition tape turned out to be the only one that tackled the film's record store scene, which he performed almost exactly as it appears in the film.
- Interior scenes were shot at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn, the same venue where Jeff Buckley's actual 1991 tribute concert for his father took place.
- Penn Badgley took guitar and vocal lessons and rehearsed with Gary Lucas, a songwriter and former collaborator of the real Jeff Buckley, and he performed all of his singing scenes live.
- Director Daniel Algrant said the concert in the film is true while the rest is fictionalized conjecture, adding that he tried to be emotionally honest rather than worry about truth.
