Plot summary
The Guardians of the Universe were the first sentient beings, and they used the green element of will to build a battery that keeps peace across the universe. Because that light is vulnerable to yellow, the color of fear, they hid the largest source of yellow energy away. Test pilot Hal Jordan is summoned by the dying Green Lantern Abin Sur, who names the human his successor. Taken to the Green Lantern Corps on the planet Oa, Jordan meets Guardians who look down on humans, and they hand him to a senior officer, Sinestro, for instruction. Sinestro is looking into Abin Sur's murder; the Lantern was wounded while searching the ship of Kanjar Ro for the stolen yellow element.

- Warner Bros. outsourced the animation of Green Lantern: First Flight to Japan's Telecom Animation Film, a TMS Entertainment subsidiary. It was the first time the studio had done so since Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker in 2000, and one of the few occasions TMS has worked for a Western studio.
- Director Lauren Montgomery deliberately skipped Hal Jordan's origin story, which is finished before the opening credits, because it had already been covered in the earlier film Justice League: The New Frontier and the team did not want to tell it again.
