Plot summary
After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Vietnamese refugees are settled at Camp Pendleton, a Marine base in southern California where an orientation camp has been set up. Gunnery Sergeant Jim Lance names Tai Tran, who arrived with his sister's two young children, as the camp translator; the children's mother is believed to be missing since the family left Vietnam. Elsewhere in the camp, Minh, silent and solitary, meets Addie, the cook, and the two become friends. Tai and his friend Duc are each drawn to a woman there: Thuy Hoa, whose father is a discredited Vietnamese general, and a former girlfriend of Duc's who is now an unhappily married second wife.

- Director Timothy Linh Bui initially did not want Patrick Swayze as Gunnery Sergeant Jim Lance, fearing his star name would overshadow the small film's story and message, but changed his mind after Swayze told him how completely he understood the film.
- Green Dragon's story was written by director Timothy Linh Bui's younger brother Tony Bui, and both brothers came to the United States with their family in 1975 as refugees from Vietnam.
