Plot summary
Danny Zuko and Sandy Young first meet during a holiday romance and do not expect to see each other again. When Sandy transfers from Utah to Rydell High, she finds Danny there, leading the T'Birds, the school's greaser gang. She gets to know the Pink Ladies, the group led by Betty Rizzo, who treats Sandy as an enemy. Kenickie, Danny's best friend and a fellow T'Bird, owns the car named Greased Lightnin' and has an on-again/off-again fling with Rizzo. Frenchy, an aspiring beautician, becomes Sandy's best friend. Marty is the Pink Ladies' resident sex kitten, and Jan is blunt and somewhat dorky.

- On the day of the broadcast, Vanessa Hudgens announced on Twitter that her father had died of cancer the night before, and said she would dedicate her performance in Grease Live to his memory.
- An hour before Grease Live went live, Marc Platt was told that a structure on the outdoor set was unsafe to use. The team began re-staging the opening number without it, but the rain and wind passed and engineers cleared the structure, restoring the original staging.
- To suit broadcast television and appease advertisers, several songs were edited: "Greased Lightnin'" lost profane and sexual words, and the Italian profanity "fongool" in "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" became "be cool".
- Joe Jonas's band DNCE was booked as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers after the producers approached them following a New York concert; at the Rydell High dance they played a 1950s-inspired remix of their own debut single, "Cake by the Ocean".
