Plot summary
When their father dies, David and Lynn are sent to live with their grandparents at a Victorian house in rural California, where the children spent time when they were very small. On the bus, a stranger in the middle of the road nearly causes an accident. That first night David dreams that his grandfather kills a woman. The next day the siblings attend a local swimming competition, where the woman beckons to David from behind the bleachers and Lynn meets a boy named Kenny. When they return, police are removing a man's corpse from the pond. At a barbecue that afternoon, Raymond tells David that a woman was said to be murdered in a nearby irrigation tunnel.
