Plot summary
In 1973, Gambino underboss Neil Dellacroce gives a young associate, John Gotti, a killing to carry out. The target is James McBratney, believed to have kidnapped Carlo Gambino's nephew Emanuel. Gotti is identified as the killer and imprisoned at Green Haven Correctional Facility. Paroled in 1977, he returns to his wife Victoria and their children, becomes a made member of the family and quickly a capo.

- Joe Pesci was cast as Angelo Ruggiero early in development and gained 30 pounds for the part; after a salary cut and being recast as Lucchese underboss Anthony Casso, he sued Fiore Films for $3 million and the case was settled out of court.
- Gotti is set in New York City and was originally scheduled to shoot there, but production moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, partly because of Ohio's revised Motion Picture Tax Credit for filmmakers.
