Plot summary
In 1985, the FBI's behavioral team passes on death row prisoner Ted Bundy as a case study, but newcomer Bill Hagmaier volunteers. Bundy's distrust of the Bureau is known, yet he responds to Hagmaier's letters, and Hagmaier travels to Florida State Prison for their first interview. In that meeting, Bundy directs the talk to detective magazines and pornography as possible drivers of serial murder. He coaxes private details from Hagmaier to build trust, then likens investigators to fishermen: going deeper makes a killer harder to catch. Bundy says he might one day pull Hagmaier under the surface to show him those depths.
