Plot summary
At a Norms diner in Los Angeles, a disheveled stranger says he has traveled back from a future laid waste by artificial superintelligence, and that a particular mix of the people eating there can keep the AI from being built. By his count, this is attempt 117. Announcing that he has a bomb, he picks Susan, Scott, Janet, Mark, Marie and Bob, and at first turns Ingrid away before changing his mind. Janet and Mark are teachers whose students, hypnotized by their phones, attacked them. Susan's son was killed in a school shooting, and she had him cloned; the clone's behavior disturbs her. Ingrid performs as a party princess and is allergic to electronics; her partner left to live inside a virtual reality.

- Real-world advances in artificial intelligence made the producers try to jumpstart the film, fearing it would lose cultural relevance if they waited too long.
- Screenwriter Matthew Robinson first wrote the film as a TV pilot called Don't Trust Anyone Under 30, about a literary major connecting with students over books. Deciding it lacked enough material for a series, he shifted focus to a man from the future and added vignettes.
