Plot summary
Best friends and next door neighbors since childhood, Joe Waters and Gus Green live on modest means in Newark, New Jersey, and share one hobby: fishing. When they win a stay in the Florida Everglades, they set off with their boat, promising to be home for Thanksgiving. At a restaurant on the way, they meet an Englishman named Martin, who steals Joe's car keys and slips away. Stranded, the two push their boat down the road until Rita and Angie, two women also looking for Martin, stop and offer them a ride. During that ride, a bump frees the boat from the car, and a train pulls it away along with their beer and supplies.

- Stuntwoman Janet Wilder was killed while filming Gone Fishin' when a speedboat rigged to jump a ramp into a group of boats flipped over and plowed into the set where the crew and extras were standing. The boat held the stunt doubles for Joe Pesci and Danny Glover.
- John G. Avildsen had already shot the first two weeks of Gone Fishin' before Disney fired him, and he paid his $2 million salary back to the studio. Christopher Cain signed on at once to replace him as director.
- The roles of Joe and Gus were first offered to John Candy and Rick Moranis in the early 1990s, but both turned the film down because they were busy with other projects. Joe Pesci and Danny Glover were cast once it was greenlit in 1995.
