Plot summary
At a shopping mall, three women at the hair salon all have their eyes on Robert Schwartz, whose parents run the clothing store across the way. Lili manages the salon and is involved with its married owner, Monsieur Jean. Mado is innocent and sweet, and Pascale, a hairdresser, is intelligent but passive and downcast. Robert's father wants him to grow up and look beyond Lili. Sylvie, who works in a coffee shop in the mall, misses her boyfriend, away in Labrador seeking his fortune. Her customer Eli, an American who was stationed in France after the war, finds Jeanne again, a Jewish woman from Poland he loved then, now the wife of a shopkeeper and Robert's mother, and he wants them to build a life together.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Golden Eighties (1986)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Because Golden Eighties was a departure from her earlier work, Chantal Akerman at first struggled to fund it, so in 1983 she released a documentary, Les Années 80, showing the musical's early production stages, including rehearsal scenes and an abbreviated version of the film, to attract investors.
- Akerman shot Golden Eighties in Brussels over eight weeks in 1985, but budget constraints made the production more modest than she had envisioned; the choreography was simpler than originally planned.
