Plot summary
At Le Vésinet, a child minder is looking after Johnny, the baby of the movie star Malissa Farrell and the concert pianist Rudy Walter, who are waiting to divorce. The minder's daughter, Marinette, has been told to return a boy named Dubois to his parents, and she mistakes Johnny for that child. Mr. and Mrs. Dubois cannot be found, so Marinette gives the baby to Max, Mrs. Dubois' father and a drummer in a band. The band is booked to play at the Jazz Festival in Monte Carlo, so Max has no choice but to take the little one with him.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While filming on the Côte d'Azur in 1951, the writer Colette spotted Audrey Hepburn on set and immediately earmarked her to play Gigi in the English stage adaptation of Colette's own work, staged by Raymond Rouleau on Broadway; that play launched Hepburn's international career and led to Roman Holiday in 1953.
- The film was a success on both sides of the Cold War: the Soviets acquired the rights for a distribution behind the Iron Curtain, an unusual outcome for a French film with no political message.
