Dixon originated the role of Will Parker in the Broadway musical Oklahoma!, a part he said Rodgers and Hammerstein built around his performance as a big, dumb cowboy in a tryout of Heels Together.
A change of course
Dixon worked a variety of jobs in adulthood before becoming a full-time entertainer, a switch that came after his 1934 encounter with Rudy Vallee.
