Plot summary
Peter is a psychotherapist with a wife, Pat, and a dominatrix, Suzanne, whom he visits in the dungeon where she works. Suzanne announces that she is leaving the dungeon and agrees to keep seeing Peter away from her workplace, without the rules that governed their sessions. Pat knows about her husband's sadomasochistic tastes but is troubled by his attachment to Suzanne. Suzanne's girlfriend, Miko, notices that her attention is elsewhere. Peter also struggles to finish a psychiatric paper. In an earlier session, Peter arrived as a client calling himself Robert while Suzanne worked under the name Mistress Diana, and the two exchanged their real names once it ended.

- Geno Lechner had no previous experience when she and Roger Rees first saw the S&M world up close at a dungeon with director Eric Werthman. Her performance as dominatrix Suzanne was convincing enough that professional dominatrices who saw the film asked Werthman whether she really was one.
- Roger Rees's agents refused to send him the Going Under script because they thought it was too racy. He asked for it anyway, preferring diverse, challenging roles, and took the part despite concern over his character's nudity.
