Plot summary
The United Nations confines every giant monster on Earth to Monsterland, in the Ogasawara island chain, with a control center beneath the island where the creatures are held and studied. In 1999, contact with the island is suddenly lost, and the monsters appear over cities around the world. Dr. Yoshido of the United Nations Science Committee sends Captain Katsuo Yamabe and his ship, the Moonlight SY-3, to investigate. On Monsterland the crew learns that the scientists, led by Dr. Otani, are mind-controlled slaves of the Kilaaks, alien women who command the monsters and demand that humanity surrender or be annihilated. Godzilla strikes New York, Rodan Moscow, Mothra Beijing, Gorosaurus Paris and Manda London.

- Kimura's earliest 1967 screenplay was titled Monster Chushingura and was to include every monster in Toho's arsenal, even King Kong and Sanda and Gaira from The War of the Gargantuas.
- In an early script, Baragon and Maguma were to be the Kilaak base's watch-dogs, but because their suits were in bad condition for the scene, they were replaced by Godzilla and Anguirus.
- Haruo Nakajima had Godzilla step over a construction crane during the Tokyo attack because he worried he might trip over it and fall; he later regretted not kicking it aside as more monster-like.
- For Gorosaurus emerging under the Arc de Triomphe, the set floor stood six and half feet above ground; a forklift hidden beneath the set raised the monster up through the ground.
- A scene in which Godzilla arrived in London to fight Manda was cut; Ishirô Honda explained that since both were mind-controlled by the same villains, they would not fight each other.
- The American version removed Akira Ifukube's title theme, moved the credits to the end, and cut a brief shot of Minilla shielding his eyes and ducking when King Ghidorah drops Anguirus from the sky.
- Director Honda was fascinated by a "monster farm" and envisioned cloning and undersea farming to supply the "huge amount of protein" the monsters would need, but only the basic idea of Monster Island survived into the film.
- Toho brought around 100 first-graders to the Mount Fuji set, where they watched the monsters in action and met actors Akira Kubo and Jun Tazaki; Yukiko Kobayashi and the monsters also visited a child actor in an Imperial Theater of London production of Oliver! in Tokyo.
