Plot summary
In the fall of 2013, Josh Wheaton, an evangelical Christian, enrolls in a philosophy course. The professor, Jeffrey Radisson, is a well-known atheist who opens the class by ordering the students to sign a declaration that God is dead. Josh alone refuses. Radisson offers him credit for the unit if he defends the opposite claim in front of his classmates. Josh's girlfriend Kara tells him to sign or drop the course, and when he will not, she ends their relationship. Radisson dates Mina, an evangelical Christian. Her brother Mark, a wealthy atheist businessman, will not visit their mother, who has dementia. Ayisha, a Muslim student, keeps her conversion to Christianity secret from her family.
