Plot summary
A man with superhuman strength who sees crimes by touch, David Dunn has taken the name the Overseer. He hunts Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man whose body holds many personalities, among them the Beast. Kevin holds four cheerleaders in an abandoned factory near Philadelphia and intends to feed them to the Beast. David frees the girls, then fights the Beast until Dr. Ellie Staple and the police take both men into custody. They wake in Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Hospital, where Elijah Price, a former terrorist with brittle bones whom David once fought, is detained. Ellie tells the three they suffer from delusions of grandeur and sets out to prove they have no powers, while David's son Joseph, Elijah's mother Mrs. Price, and Casey Cooke, a young woman who survived Kevin, try to speak for them.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Unbreakable was owned by Disney's Touchstone while Split came through Universal, so Shyamalan needed Disney's permission to use the character of Dunn in Split. He met Walt Disney Studios president Sean Bailey and struck a gentlemen's agreement: no fee, in return for Disney being involved in any sequel.
- Willis reportedly seemed confused and needed help with his lines during filming, something later believed to be an early sign of the aphasia that led the actor to retire from filming in 2021.
- The flashbacks to Elijah and Joseph's childhood were not shot for this film at all: they were edited in from footage that had been deleted from Unbreakable.
