Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Coley moves to rural Oregon to live with Curtis, the father she has barely known. At a restaurant, Sonya asks her to join a group of friends. When Trenton throws Coley into a lake, Sonya apologizes and shares her AIM ID. The following day, the two steal alcohol and go to Sonya's home, where Sonya performs a dance. As the friendship deepens, Trenton grows possessive and hostile. Sonya brings Coley to a spot near railroad tracks. There, Coley says that Curtis left when she was little and that her mother took her own life. Sonya comforts her; they kiss and sleep side by side. In the morning, Sonya hurries away and does not answer Coley's messages.

- Coley's bedroom was the hardest interior to light: an A-frame whose highest point was only about five feet and whose walls were glossy wood from floor to ceiling. Tungsten was a fire hazard, so Arri Orbiters with projection optics were used to keep the fixtures cool.
- Cinematographer Sonja Tsypin, production designer Lindsey Moran and costume designer Kelli Dunsmore limited the film to "off-wheel" colors, such as periwinkle instead of purple and salmon instead of pink, and plotted the palette as a sine wave that tracked Coley's story from warm golds into jewel tones and muted steel blue.
- The film was shot on an Arri Alexa Mini LF with Canon K35 primes, picked by cinematographer Sonja Tsypin for warmth, halation and flares that avoided a sterile digital image, plus one Arri Signature Prime for a few moments that needed higher detail.
- Cinematographer Sonja Tsypin kept the 2015 Girls Like Girls music video's sun-drenched warmth and intimate camera, but the feature needed a wider palette and more contrast so the look could cover grief as well as first love.
