Plot summary
Danny Churchill, Jr. is a young playboy. His father, a tycoon, has grown tired of the partying and pulls him out of Yale University, packing him off to Cody College of Mines and Agriculture, an all-male school set in the western desert. The isolation is supposed to make the young man concentrate on his studies. The long walk from the train depot brings Danny to Ginger Gray, who runs the local post office and is a favorite among the students, and he falls for her at once. The college is not what he pictured: the facilities are primitive, the students ride rough and play practical jokes. Danny settles in and goes back to courting Ginger.

- Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell were originally announced to star in Girl Crazy, a follow-up to Broadway Melody of 1940.
- MGM's Roger Edens, the Freed Unit's musical arranger and Garland's mentor, convinced Judy Garland, who was eager to play more adult roles, that one more pairing with Mickey Rooney would be a good idea.
- When MGM ordered all the elements of Girl Crazy's musical numbers destroyed in the early 1950s, technicians had already transferred the original multi-channel optical film tracks to 1/4" audiotape, and the surviving tracks were released on a stereo CD in 1995.
- Girl Crazy's musical numbers were recorded in stereophonic sound but mixed into mono for release to theaters; Rhino Records later issued a compact disc of the original stereo recordings, which include probably the only stereo tracks of Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra.
- An additional production number, "Bronco Busters", which was sung by Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney and Nancy Walker, was cut from the film.
