Rags Ragland
Biography
Rags Ragland, born in Louisville, was an American comedian and character actor who made his reputation in burlesque, where his unpredictable ad-libs and habit of wandering into other comics' acts made him a standout. He rose to top banana at Minsky's, the best-known burlesque house of the day. When classic burlesque faded, he turned to Broadway and to Hollywood, signing as a contract player for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1941 with Ringside Maisie. Cast as good-natured oafs who mangled the English language, he appeared in the studio's light comedies and musicals and became popular as Red Skelton's sidekick in the Whistling comedies, among them Whistling in the Dark (1941) and Whistling in Brooklyn (1943). His last film was the drama The Hoodlum Saint (1946), and he died that same year.
