Plot summary
Groceries that supermarkets around Los Angeles throw away are often still edible, and Jeremy Seifert and a circle of friends retrieve them from the dumpsters. What they carry off adds up to a large amount of food. Seifert brings the question to store managers, asking why the surplus is not given to local food banks. He cites the 1996 Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, which shields businesses that donate from liability. Seifert also weighs the legality and the ethics of the practice, and turns the same question on households that toss food which is partly spoiled or simply past its expiration date.
