Plot summary

A team of NASA scientists and marine biologists travels with James Cameron aboard the Russian research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to examine ten vents across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Those vents sit in volcanic regions, where ocean water meets molten rock and rises again as plumes that are superheated and charged with chemicals. Around the vents live giant tube worms and swarms of blind white crabs, along with huge numbers of shrimp that can sense heat. None of these animals lives on sunlight; each draws energy from the vents and survives in the sulfurous water. Because the vents support life without the sun, the team treats them as a possible model for life beyond Earth.
