Plot summary
Nanu, a polar bear cub, and Seela, a walrus calf, are born into the Arctic. Nanu comes out of her birth cave with her brother and their mother, and the two cubs play in the snow before going back inside. The following day their mother starts teaching them how to live in the wild; the first rule is to avoid adult male polar bears, which are apt to kill cubs. Seela stays in the water with her mother and with Auntie, a female who guards the calf in its early months. Learning to climb onto an ice floe, Seela watches her mother haul herself up while Auntie keeps watch for danger. A male polar bear swims toward the group, and the calf and her mother depend on Auntie to hold him off.
