Plot summary
Under British rule, farmland around Dhanbad is seized for coal mining, and the Qureshi butchers hold sway in the village of Wasseypur. In 1941 the Pashtun laborer Shahid Khan is driven out for passing himself off as a Qureshi bandit who robbed British trains, and he settles his family in Dhanbad to work the mines. After his wife dies in labor, he kills the overseer who had refused him leave. The tycoon Ramadhir Singh hires Shahid as a security enforcer and then has him killed. Shahid's son Sardar, still a boy, survives and grows up vowing revenge. As an adult, Sardar marries Nagma Khatoon, and with his cousin Asgar and his uncle Nasir he covertly robs freight trains and fuel stations belonging to Ramadhir.

- Both parts of Gangs of Wasseypur were shot as a single film measuring 319 minutes; because no Indian theatre would screen a five-hour movie, it was divided into two parts.
- The gang wars in the film mostly happened for real between Wasseypur's gangs, not the Singhs, who instigated but never joined them; Ramadhir Singh is based on Suryadeo Singh, and there was no real-life Shahid Khan.
- Gangs of Wasseypur was Huma Qureshi's first film, which she called her "dream debut"; she won the part after director Anurag Kashyap spotted her in a Samsung commercial he was directing.
- While filming in Varanasi in December 2010, the film's chief assistant director, Sohil Shah, died performing one of the stunt scenes; the movie was dedicated to him in its opening titles.
- Gangs of Wasseypur was released in Indian theatres on 22 June 2012 but was banned in Kuwait and Qatar for its violent content.
- Piyush Mishra and Tigmanshu Dhulia were left to decide between themselves who would play Nasir and who Ramadhir; Mishra picked Nasir and Dhulia portrayed Ramadhir Singh.
